The second biggest cause of long term absence in the workplace

Mental health is the second biggest cause of long term absence in the workplace and it’s still rising so employers need to manage wellbeing to reduce any impact of short and long term absence on the business.

There are several ways employers can support employee wellbeing.

At Solutions for HR, we work regularly on wellbeing strategy.

It’s not just the immediate health-related areas that spring to mind such as occupational health, employee assistance programmes, lifestyle support and health promotion.

Wellbeing should be holistic and address wider areas such as flexible working, work demands, autonomy, leadership, work relationships, creativity, employee voice and career development.

When dealing with mental health it is important that managers receive appropriate coaching so they feel comfortable and confident with their approach.

Adjustments should be made as a supportive measure and medical advice sought to see how the impact of the condition may be alleviated within the workplace.
