As of the 6th of April 2022, an additional version of the fit note (otherwise known as a statement of fitness or sickness certificate) has been introduced to remove the need for a signature box.

These forms will not require the Doctor’s signature, only their name and profession, to be eligible for use.

The previous process of having a doctor physically sign the fit note in ink had been an issue for some time, especially during the coronavirus pandemic, where medical organisations were forced to move towards virtual consultations with patients and/or service users.

The Social Security (Medical Evidence) and Statutory Sick Pay (Medical Evidence) (Amendment) Regulations 2022 (SI 2022/298) now means that digital certification is acceptable, rather than a physical signature.

Whilst this may help alleviate strain on GPs and medical practices, this change in legislation may raise some concerns for employers, as fit notes can be obtained without a full and in-person GP assessment of the individual’s condition.
