On the 3rd of October 2022, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) published an updated online version of the starter checklist form.

The starter checklist is used to gather details about a new employee if they do not have a P45, and to work out their appropriate tax code.

It also highlights whether an employee has a student loan, and what type of plan they have, as this may be relevant to their payroll.

Therefore, even if an employee has a P45, the employee should complete the form if they have a student loan plan.

The new online format involves a series of questions to be filled in by the employee.

Once completed, the employee will receive a new starter declaration that they can download and print, and this can then be sent to their new employer.

This move comes after figures from 2021/2022, showed that there were almost 3 million new starter RTI submissions with errors.

Therefore, the hope is that this new system should reduce the errors often encountered when completing these forms.

There is also a printable version of the form that can be filled in by hand, which is available on the GOV.UK.
